A forum to bring together, in-person and online, national and international artists, scholars and educators interested in sharing ideas, experiences and perspectives on the link between artistic practices, ecological approaches and cultural change. The event is associated with the La Selva international residency.
Between 5th and 8th October 2023 a group of 40 eco-oriented artists, scholars and educators from all over the world will gather in the Natural Reserve of the Roman Coast (Rome, Central Italy) to participate in ‘La Selva’: International Ecological Arts and Eco-Somatic Residency. ‘La Selva’ is an interdisciplinary practice-and-discourse exchange which aims to curate a re-discovering of the deep knowledge of ecological connection within the human experience, as a necessary process of care, response-ability and cultural resistance.
As part of ‘La Selva’ residency Teatro del Lido (a member of Rome’s public theatres network) will host a hybrid in presence/online forum with participatory presentations and discussions. The forum will be an open and critical space where residency participants will meet the local community to discuss the emergent role of the eco-embodied arts for the development of a response-able and care-based ecological consciousness capable of stimulating and supporting cultural change. We will explore the meeting points where artistic practices and concerns might connect with local communities and discuss the potential impact of such connections on ecological crises and global inequalities. The forum will include online presentations of eco-embodied arts practices from different continents as a sharing of different voices, contexts, and cultures. The event will also provide an opportunity for launching the International Forum for Eco-Embodied Arts (IFEEA).

BIOS
Raffaele Rufo (PhD) is an independent artist-scholar based in Rome. He is active across the fields of dance, somatics and performance through practices of research, creation, teaching, supervision, and curation. His work interweaves words, movement and video to explore bodily perception as an ecology and as the medium for participating in the more-than-human ecologies of life. His internationally published research on eco-somatics includes ‘Sensing with Trees’ (Venti Journal, Vol. 2.2, 2022); ‘Co-Editing with the More-than-Human’ (with Doerte Weig, Journal of Embodied Research, Vol. 5.2, 2022); ’Humans, Trees and the Intimacy of Movement’ (European Journal of Ecopsychology, Vol. 8, 2023); and ‘Decolonizing Perception’ (an interview included in the German collection Praxisbuch Transformation Dekolonisieren, edited by Yari Or, forthcoming). He recently presented a public lecture on ‘Somatic Arts and Liveable Future’ and a workshop on ‘Ecokinetics’ at (Re)Gaining Ecological Futures (Floating University Berlin, 2022). He is guest editor of the special issue on Ecologies of Embodiment of the Journal of Embodied Research Vol. 5.2 (2022) and Vol. 6.2 (forthcoming in 2023) Recent artistic collaborations include ‘Ecosomatic Persephone’ with Flavia Gallo and Humanities Mundi Teatro, ‘Return of the Centaurs’ with Paul Carter and the Pompeii Commitment, and ‘Body Earth Reciprocity’ with Thiago Gambogi, Nathalie Mann, Valentina Vitolo, and Intercultural Roots. www.raffaelerufo.com
Thomas Kampe (PhD) has worked as a performing artist, researcher and somatic educator across the globe. Between 2012 and 2022 he worked as Professor of Somatic Performance & Education at Bath Spa University, UK, where he co-directed the Creative Corporealities Research Group. Artistic collaborations include work with Liz Aggiss, Hilde Holger, Julia Pascal, Tanzinitiative Hamburg, Somatische Akademie Berlin, and with Carol Brown on re-embodying the diasporic practices of Modernist choreographer Gertrud Bodenwieser. Thomas’ research focuses on critical somatic legacies and he recently co-edited JDSP Vol. 9. (2017) ‘Bodily undoing: Somatics as practices of critique’ and JDSP Vol. 13.1 &2 (2022): ‘Embodying Eco- Consciousness: Somatics, Aesthetic Practice and Social Action’. He is the co-editor of the book 'Beyond Forgetting: persecution/exile/memory - transdisciplinary perspectives on education in design and performance' (Cuvillier 2020). Thomas is a practitioner of The Feldenkrais Method® and guest-editor of the IFF research Journal Vol. 6 (2019): Practices of Freedom: The Feldenkrais Method and Creativity. Humanitas Mundi Teatro is a cultural association aimed at carrying out theatrical, educational, cultural, artistic, scientific and humanistic activities of social interest. Active since 2022 in the territory of the 10th Municipality of Rome, Humanitas Mundi Teatro aims to develop projects and knowledge through the professional specificity of members in the field of theater education, dissemination of theater culture in the public sphere and theater production. For the realization of the social purpose, the association: organizes and promotes conventions, debates, study and in-depth seminars, training courses and events, and artistic performance events; directly promotes and implements the creation of publications and audiovisual aids of all kinds; develops the activity of study, research, experimentation, projects and internships in its own field of activity and in other similar and related ones.

SULLE ARTI ECOLOGICHE ED ECO-SOMATICHE

Un forum per riunire, in presenza e online, artisti, studiosi ed educatori, nazionali e internazionali, interessati a condividere idee, esperienze e prospettive sul legame tra pratiche artistiche, approcci ecologici e cambiamento culturale. L'evento è associato alla residenza internazionale ‘La Selva’.
Tra il 5 e l'8 ottobre 2023 un gruppo di 40 artisti, studiosi ed educatori eco-orientati provenienti da tutto il mondo si riunirà nel territorio di Ostia della Riserva Naturale del Litorale Romano per partecipare a ‘La Selva’: Residenza Internazionale di Arti Ecologiche ed Eco-Somatiche. ‘La Selva’ è uno scambio interdisciplinare di pratiche e discorsi che mira a riscoprire la profonda conoscenza della connessione ecologica all'interno dell'esperienza umana, come processo necessario di cura, capacità di risposta e resistenza culturale.
Nell'ambito della residenza ‘La Selva’ il Teatro del Lido ospiterà un forum ibrido in presenza/online con presentazioni e discussioni partecipative. Il forum sarà uno spazio aperto e critico in cui i partecipanti alla residenza incontreranno la comunità locale per discutere il ruolo emergente delle arti eco-incarnate per lo sviluppo di una coscienza ecologica basata sulla responsabilità e sulla cura e capace di stimolare e sostenere il cambiamento culturale. Esploreremo i punti d'incontro in cui le pratiche e le preoccupazioni degli artisti potrebbero connettersi con le problematiche del territorio e il potenziale impatto di queste connessioni sulle crisi ecologiche e le disuguaglianze globali. Il forum includerà presentazioni online di artisti provenienti da diversi continenti, come condivisione di voci, contesti e culture differenti. L’evento sarà anche l'occasione per lanciare l'International Forum for Eco-Embodied Arts (IFEEA).

Raffaele Rufo (PhD) è un artista-studioso indipendente con sede a Roma. È attivo nei campi della danza, della somatica e della performance attraverso pratiche di ricerca, creazione, insegnamento, supervisione e curatela. Il suo lavoro intreccia parole, movimento e video per esplorare la percezione corporea come ecologia e come mezzo per partecipare alle ecologie “more-than-human” della vita. La sua ricerca sull'eco-somatica, pubblicata a livello internazionale, comprende "Sensing with Trees" (Venti Journal, Vol. 2.2, 2022); "Co-Editing with the More-than-Human" (con Doerte Weig, Journal of Embodied Research, Vol. 5.2, 2022); "Humans, Trees and the Intimacy of Movement" (European Journal of Ecopsychology, Vol. 8, 2023); e "Decolonizing Perception" (intervista inclusa nella raccolta tedesca Praxisbuch Transformation Dekolonisieren, a cura di Yari Or, di prossima pubblicazione). Thomas Kampe (PhD) ha lavorato come artista performativo, ricercatore ed educatore somatico in tutto il mondo. Tra il 2012 e il 2022 è stato professore di Somatic Performance & Education presso la Bath Spa University, Regno Unito, dove ha co-diretto il Creative Corporealities Research Group. Le sue collaborazioni artistiche includono lavori con Liz Aggiss, Hilde Holger, Julia Pascal, Tanzinitiative Hamburg, Somatische Akademie Berlin e con Carol Brown sulla ri-incarnazione delle pratiche diasporiche della coreografa modernista Gertrud Bodenwieser.
